Ferroviario de Maputo has emerged as the champions of the WBLA 2024 tournament

The Mozambique team has secured its third African title, having previously won consecutively in 2018 and 2019. DAKAR (Senegal) – Ferroviario de Maputo has been crowned the champions of the 2024 Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA)! Coached by Nasir Salé, the Mozambique squad made a triumphant return to the African competition after missing last year’s tournament in Egypt. They defeated Al Ahly Sporting Club with a score of 81-72 to seize the title. Ingvild Mucauro, the 2019 African Most Valuable Player (MVP), showcased an exceptional performance, leading the team with 18 points, seven rebounds, and an equal number of steals, in addition to four assists, achieving a game-high efficiency of 25, even after fouling out in the critical last two minutes of the game.

The Mozambican squad, which led by 13 points at the end of the first half, allowed the Egyptians to score 23 points to their 19 in the second quarter, thus narrowing the gap to eight points. A notable 21-12 scoring spree, featuring eight points from Mucauro and four additional steals, left the Egyptians facing a 17-point deficit as they entered the final ten minutes of play. The atmosphere in the arena became electrified during the last quarter, as Ndioma Kané inspired a fervent response from half of her compatriots, leading Al Ahly SC on a 9-2 scoring run that brought the score to 72-61. Coach Salé then brought back Carla Covane and Mucauro, although Mucauro fouled out with about two minutes left in the game. With victory within their grasp, Ferroviario proved unyielding and clinched the win.
