In Denver, members of the police force and young individuals collaborate on the court to cultivate relationships and participate in basketball

Recently, young group of people participated in basketball drills and scrimmages, with the gym at the Auraria Event Center of Metropolitan State University of Denver echoing with the sounds of squeaking floors.

In the midst of this lively atmosphere, a group of Denver police officers joined in, attempting to keep pace with the vibrant energy of the young participants. This gathering was part of the annual Hoops 4 Safety event, designed to promote interaction between law enforcement and local youth.

This event is a joint effort involving the MSU Denver men’s and women’s basketball teams, the Denver Police Department, and the Gold Crown Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on youth sports and enrichment programs.

For 10-year-old Selena Gallardo, the key takeaway was the importance of teamwork, complemented by the basketball she received at the camp.

Throughout the clinic, MSU Denver’s players and coaches facilitated drills and scrimmages. Nevertheless, the event included more than just basketball, as participants, including children and DPD officers, took part in a large-scale game of dodgeball.

In its fourth year, Hoops 4 Safety continues to thrive. According to Bill Hanzlik, the Chief Executive and Co-Founder of the Golden Crown Foundation, the participation of the DPD in the camp allows officers to take a break from their daily obligations.

“They’re under a lot of stress every day out on the street,” said Hanzlik, a former player and head coach for the Denver Nuggets. “They’re all having fun. So, it’s a great kind of release for them and it’s neat to see them really be involved and care.”

Players from MSU Denver’s basketball team interacted with the children by answering their questions, and every child was awarded prizes such as basketballs and backpacks.

It was an amazing atmosphere.
