Although it’s hard to imagine, Klay Thompson is no longer part of the Golden State Warriors. However, the Dallas Mavericks guard still maintains close ties with several members of the Warriors family. Recently, Thompson traveled to Cameroon with Festus Ezeli, a former Warriors center who has since transitioned to a role as a team broadcaster. The two were there to support youth basketball initiatives, including a U20 tournament and various basketball camps. Ezeli shared several moments from the trip on his Instagram stories, with credit to @ceeayech for archiving and reposting them on Twitter.
Ezeli, originally from Nigeria, has been an advocate for growing basketball across Africa. He serves as the Executive Director of VisionC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people through the sport. In his posts, Ezeli tagged VisionC, indicating that he invited Thompson to assist with the program.
VisionC held its inaugural basketball camps in 2022, which are open to boys and girls aged 14-17. These camps offer not only basketball training but also a variety of social activities. In addition, the nonprofit organizes the U20 Vision Annual Tournament. According to Ezeli’s Instagram story, Thompson had the honor of tossing the opening jump ball in the championship game of the U20 tournament.
Ezeli, who was drafted by the Warriors in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft, was a reliable presence in the team’s rotation throughout his career. Though injuries limited him to just 170 games, he was part of the Warriors’ 2014-15 championship team and contributed during their record-breaking 73-9 season in 2015-16.
As for Thompson, his legacy with the Warriors is cemented, and he is expected to one day receive a statue outside the Chase Center and a spot in the Hall of Fame. Now with the Mavericks, he is aiming to add even more accomplishments to his impressive career.
