With donations and baskets coming in from around the world, the Plymouth brothers’ campaign to raise money for Ukrainian refugees by “selling” three-pointers and free throws has taken off, raking in excess of $25,000.
“They started with a $500 goal in mind, which I thought I was going to have to contribute to, probably $499, and we’re at $25,000 today,” said the boys’ mother, Aneta Mendoza.
The boys, 10-year-old Benjamin and 12-year-old Nathaniel, had to enlist assistance in order to make the 5,000 three-pointers promised in their youth-driven campaign. There are currently 120 members on their team, about half of whom are from Minnesota. The rest are from other parts of the United States and the world, including Puerto Rico, Poland, Romania, Australia, Germany, and Switzerland. A few dozen people participated in a three-point and free throw shooting competition at Bloomington’s The Dish Lab.
Aneta Mendoza was born and raised in Jastrzebie Zdroj, a Southern Polish city that is currently housing hundreds of refugees from Ukraine. She said that she is currently working with the local government in this region to ascertain where the greatest need is. The idea is to buy and ship necessities, such as food, clothing, and supplies.
“Their game plan has also grabbed the attention of the hometown team. They got invited to the Timberwolves vs Lakers game. The first 35 kids to join will be attending that game,” Aneta explained.
The family had originally intended to accept donations for ten days, but due to increased interest in the boys’ campaign, they kept it going on the Venmo account @threepointersforUkraine.
Additionally, they have a GoFundMe page, and Aneta uses Facebook to post updates on their achievements.
Additionally, you can write a card to one of the refugee children who will be arriving in Jastrzebie Zdroj or donate new clothing for newborns through youth clothing. Send Aneta a direct email at anetabrzoza@gmail.com to set up a donation.
